Ripped DVDs play mostly like i wanted and i can finally listen to every track of the 500GB of music i've collected over the years. after installing the Google Play store (a bit of a pain), VLC, Total Commander and Chrome, i just copied all the files i wanted onto the SSD from the Mac, plugged the SSD into the Hub and voila.the Kindle Fire 7 recognized the drive and let me browse it.

i did this all with a Mac, so your mileage on Windows might vary. the Kindle won't recognize the SSD unless it's formatted ExFAT with a Master Boot Record.

The rest is mostly mucking with software and settings. now looking into building a little charger with backup battery to sort some of this out. Power is going to be a thing, because (as i found out tonight) USBOTG is designed not to power the device when connected, so your Kindle will run off its internal battery while everything else will be powered by the USB Hub. then you need a separate SATA to USB cable to connect the SSD to the Hub. you then need an USBOTG cable that will connect the USB port on the Kindle to the USB Hub. the prototype is cool, but not yet slick.Īssuming you want to use an SSD or some other drive, you'll need to buy a powered USB Hub, as the Kindle's USB port won't power anything.
figured that i would just buy the parts and experiment, and all the initial bits i needed were available from Amazon. I wanted a dedicated media player with a 2TB SSD and a USB 3.0 hub for starters. Not exactly what you're asking for, but i just did this with a stock Kindle Fire 7 tonight.
